Welcome!

What is Low Mileage Food? It started with a couple in North Carolina who wanted to eat more locally and live in a more sustainable fashion. As we began to research how to eat locally in our area, including just what was available where and for what price, we discovered that this information is often buried, scattered, and difficult to find. We’re hoping to make this website a repository for this sort of information, so that those who are interested in the same sort of issues can have an easier time than we have in finding the information they need. We hope to build a library of information that stretches beyond our local area, and we hope to build a community of people who are engaged in the same sorts of endeavors as we are.

Why are we concerned about eating locally? Online, you’ll see statistics thrown about that the average meal in the United States travels anywhere from 1500 to 2000 miles from origin to plate. Environmentally, this is an unsound practice. We cannot continue to eat in the United States in the way that we have been. Furthermore, eating more locally supports our local economy and local producers. In a state that has seen family farms rapidly going out of business in the last couple of decades, this is also a concern.

What are our goals? Nothing is perfect. We’re hoping to devote twenty-five percent of our food dollars to local goods over the next few months, and then go from there. We hope that you’ll join us in the journey.

About the website: The blog has stories about what we find along the way, such as responses we receive from stores and manufacturers. The wiki (coming soon) will serve as the main repository of information we discover. Our forums (coming soon) will be open for public registration and serve as our town hall where we can share information and ideas in an open manner. The forums won’t just be about local foods though - you’ll also find recipes, household hints, etc.

Thank you for visiting and enjoy your stay!
